Dear Mr. Secretary-General,

We are writing to you as the citizens of Myanmar to request that you facilitate negotiations between the military leaders and the leaders of the National League for Democracy, the elected democratic party of Myanmar.
The United Nations Security Council has released a press statement calling for the immediate release of the detained elected officials and our State Counsellor, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The members of the Security Council expressed concern and reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity, and unity of Myanmar.

We are very grateful for your concerns and would like to request that the UN demonstrates its strong commitment to Myanmar’s sovereignty by facilitating negotiations between the military dictators and the National League for Democracy to understand the military’s motivations, so that we can secure the release of the detained democratic representatives and civilians.

We would like to remind the United Nations of U Thant, the Burmese United Nations Secretary-General who prevented the world from a Third World War by defusing the Cuban Missile Crisis. U Thant secured non-invasion guarantees for the US with the Soviet Union in exchange for the withdrawal of missiles in the Soviet Union. This opened up negotiations between the US President John F Kennedy and Soviet Premier Khrushchev. Even amidst the intense pressure by the US to invade, U Thant proved to the world that amicable negotiations are possible and that they can lead to a peaceful agreement.

Today, thousands of people have taken to the streets of Myanmar to protest. The military dictators have released a statement saying that protesters will be subject to the use of teargas, tasers, and even firearms. They have used violence in the 1988 uprising and will not hesitate to use lethal force again.

As a citizen of Myanmar, U Thant has contributed his earnest efforts as the UN Secretary-General to achieve peace in the West. Therefore, we, as the citizens of Myanmar, are requesting the United Nations to do the same for Myanmar by facilitating negotiations between the military and the National League for Democracy. We urge your prompt action to prevent the unnecessary loss of lives during this civil unrest.

Yours Sincerely
