Let’s give Native Americans some freedom, shall we? So if you may or may not know, there is a large claim of territory owned by a Native American tribe called the Lakota Sioux, an ancient tribe who have lived there long before the European colonial settlers. The Lakota Sioux’s territory is about the same size as the Middle Eastern country of Syria. This is Lakotah, and the natives living there have been desiring independence from the United States. In 1868, the US Government signed the Treaty of Laramie, giving the Lakota Sioux the rights to the land. However, in the 1870s, the government apparently “forgot” this promise when they allowed thousands of miners to swarm the land with the promise of gold. Today, the Lakota still consider themselves as an independent country, but they are still fighting for international recognition. What you can do to help is sign this petition to give to the United Nations to help give the Lakota the recognition that they deserve.
