Slavery refers to a condition in which individuals are owned by others, who control where they live and at what they work. Slavery had previously existed throughout history, in many times and most places. The ancient Greeks, the Romans, Incas and Aztecs all had slaves.

According to CNN, migrants and refugees stuck in Libya are being sold into slavery. Modern slavery still affects more than 40 million people all over the world. And Libya has led to a situation where stranded men and women are being held against their will and, in some cases, sold into slavery or prostitution. As shocking as it seems, it’s indeed true. The reason why this slave trade is happening is because there is really no rule of law across much of Libya.

In this slave trade, not only are these people's dignity and human rights are at stake but also their lives. As members of the human race, we should protect each other and value them as much as we value ours. Too often they are broken, brutalized and have been abused. Their voices carry more weight than anyone else.

Possibly, if the government have enough will and power to change the country, if they work justifiably and prevent corruption, if they finally have the right mind to care for other people and not just for themselves, there would be a great difference. They could give fairer and humane works for the citizens from other countries or to make their own people stay and not take a risk by being a migrant.

Even in little steps as students, we could also help. We could support projects and organizations that help migrants and refugees who are experiencing slavery or spread awareness for all.

Nevertheless, we must know that humankind has no cost. They may be poor, but that doesn't make them less of a person. They also have their rights, and they deserve to be treated with respect.

Maybe it isn't noticeable now, because people don't give attention as much as they do, compared to other issues. Even so, your status nor your color should never be a basis for a person to belittle you. It's not too late, let's free them from their chains, and let them experience the beauty of life.
