A Fixed English Alphabet
A Fixed English Alphabet
The Issue
*Don't watch the video if you can't handle it. It contains very vulgar language*
Ever wonder why the English alphabet is so weird?
Read that first sentence and just ask yourself what letters don't belong. Sure, at some point in time these letters did indeed belong. But language changes. And spelling should change as well. Below is a list of a modified English alphabet that was created by me, although I do not wish to take any credit as there has been many others like me.
A, Å, Æ, Ai, Au, B, Ç, D, Đ, E, Ë, Ė, É, F, G, H, I, Í, J, K, L, M, N, Ņ, O, Oi, P, R, S, Ş, T, Þ, U, V, W, Y, Z, Ż
Right away you might be noticing accent marks. Don't be afraid, all these letters represent all the sounds of Modern English. While it seems like this is only making the alphabet more difficult, it's actually making it more easy. Think about it this way, each letter now represents one sound. Which is great news for new learners (from other alphabets). Including children who are being raised as native English speakers. This also makes learning the vowels even easier. English has only 5 vowels, yet it has 13 vowel sounds (14 or 15 depending on who you ask). For new learners that's a lot to take in. For every new learner of the alphabet, including native children, 3 or 4 vowel sounds needs to be memorized and applied to each vowel. The same goes for consonants. The letter C, for example. Look at these three words.
Circle, car, dance.
Circle has two C's, yet both are pronounced differently. Out of all three words, one C sounds like an S, one like a K, and one like a 'ts' sound (dants). That's three different sounds for one letter. As you can see I dropped this obnoxious letter from the modified alphabet. I also dropped Q, considering it is only ever pronounced like K. I dropped the letter X as well because it is a letter that usually only represents two sounds at once. For example, 'gz' or 'ks'. Replacing X with the correct letters that represent the sounds will make learning easier. You can also see I replaced all consonant digraphs with one single character.
Ch=ç, dh=đ, ng=ņ, sh=ş, th=þ, zh=ż
This makes learning much easier, because instead of memorizing one sound to two different letters, one sound is being applied to one letter. You can also see my installation of extra vowels to fit the amount of vowel sounds. Below is a second list of the same letters, except with the IPA equivalents (in the same exact order). Please do not assume the pronunciation of these sounds. Look them up if needed.
/ɑ:/, /ɔ:/, /æ/, /aɪ/, /aʊ/, /b/, /tʃ/, /d/, /ð/, /e/, /ə/, /ʊ/, /eɪ/, /f/, /g/, /h/, /ɪ/, /i:/, /dʒ/, /k/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /ŋ/, /oʊ/, /ɔɪ/, /p/, /r/, /s/, /ʃ/, /t/, /θ/, /u:/, /v/, /w/, /j/, /z/, /ʒ/
As you guys can see by those IPA equivalents, this modified alphabet is not only easier for everyone but it also adds a very nice touch to the English language. English being one of the only languages in the world to not have accents, this modification would be nice. This modification was not only made to be easier or to make English look better, it was also made as an update for the current outdated alphabet. This new alphabet resembles all modern speech and vocabulary if constructed the right way.
There is one thing I would like to mention. First let's look at the "rules" of this new alphabet.
1. No need for double letters
2. No need for silent letters
3. No need for several sounds to be applied to single letters
Take the verb "fix". Now make it past tense, "fixed". In my new alphabet this becomes "fiks" in present tense. Which seems normal enough. Now let's make it past tense. "Fiksd". The E was dropped due to Rule #2. And now the word itself does not look very pleasing. Two ideas came to my mind. Use the Germanic inflection "ge-". For example, "gefiks". Or use the Albanian-inspired inflection "-u". For example, "fiksu". Numerous options exist for this problem, all solutions being easier than actually applying this new alphabet for English speakers.
In order for this change to happen, we need people in the higher up to realize the need and want for this change. Posting on social media and sharing with friends is great. Below is a transcript of this petition using only my new alphabet.
I'm not saying it has to be this different from normal English, but we all get the idea.
*Also, do not mistake this alphabet for a different language. Although it looks like a different language, it's still English. Try and read it as normally as possible*
