We say yes to Las Fallas as Intangible Cultural Heritage, but without torture

Next November the UNESCO will decide whether the celebration known as Las Fallas, in the city of Valencia (Spain), is declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

From the Carles Pinazo Association, comprised of valencian people who love our land, culture and traditions, we emphasize our respect for the Fallas, one of the most beautiful and open festivities in the world. However, we don't agree with the fact of recognizing Las Fallas as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity if bullfighting is included during the festivity, where hundreds of innocent animals are being tortured in public.

Recognizing Las Fallas festival as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is also recognizing the barbaric practice of torturing bulls in public, giving strength to an increasingly socially rejected practice which refers to dark ages of our past. During the week Las Fallas is celebrated, Valencia receives thousands of tourists, a perfect time for bullfighting supporters to take advantage of the situation and promote the cruel torture of animals. "Falla" is the name of a great monument made of wood and cardboard, and has nothing to do with torture and pain.

Bullfighting is an inhumane spectacle far from the values defended by UNESCO. That is why we ask UNESCO and its members to demand a change of the dates bullfighting events take place, and get them out of the same week of Fallas celebration. This must be a requirement for the Fallas festival to aspire as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as this magnificent celebration deserves.

Sing if you would like to say yes to Las Fallas as Intangible Cultural Heritage, but without torture.
