Help tackle dangerous owners and illegal breeding by abolishing prejudice banned breed law
The Issue
In 1991 the government introduced the Dangerous Dogs Act and banned breeds in an attempt to stamp out the number of attacks on people and breeding of these dogs. Evidence shows this has been unsuccessful and in 2015 over 3000 Pit Bulls were recorded to be illegally living in the UK. In 2016 police reported to have seized over 5000 dangerous dogs in three years. Making these breeds illegal has only resulted in a rise of irresponsible and undesirable ownership of these breeds. Making the situation much more dangerous.
The microchip law will not change anything for these breeds as they are illegal. Legalization will give these owners the opportunity to seek help. Legalization will save many innocent and harmless dogs from being destroyed simply because of their breed. The new amended Dangerous Dogs Act came into effect in England and Wales on 13 May 2014. This law covers everything necessary and applies to all dog owners no matter what size or breed.
If these breeds were banned due to statistics and the number of attacks on either animals or people, are we prepared to banned Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, Jack Russells or Border Collies? If these breeds were banned due to the strength and power they have, are we prepared to ban the Mastiff, Rottweiler or German Shepherd? The law on banning these breeds is prejudice and out dated.
No dog is born dangerous or aggressive, it's the owner. As it stands making these breeds illegal has evidently resulted in them ending up in the wrong hands and it is the dogs who are suffering because of this. Thousands of these dogs are being seized and destroyed and as long as they are illegal the cycle will continue. Legalization will give these breeds the chance of a better future, better owners, and gives us the opportunity to approach and change the situation.
