Military service members cannot provide adequate housing for their family members. The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is an allowance to offset the cost of housing when you do not receive government-provided housing. However, government housing is frequently inadequate, unsafe, can be unequal and discriminatory, and is becoming more difficult for service members to attain. Further complicating access to housing for military members is the housing crisis. Members are having to take out loans, live in hotels for extended periods, and exhaust financial means with no end in sight. The formula utilized to calculate housing rates is not transparent. Military bases are often near areas with high crime rates and substandard housing off base with on base housing often lacking adequate maintenance.  Families that relocate are often perplexed as to why they could afford a home at the previous duty station but can’t afford a safe home at the new duty station and left in a financial bind. Please, enact an emergency BAH increase rather than wait for the re evaluation cycles so military families can get the help they need now! Help military families stay safe and find reasonable housing during unreasonable times! Support military families.
