Two years have passed since President Donald Trump has passed Executive Order 13841, which would supposedly stop the separation of families in detention centers while still enforcing the administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy. However, this executive order did not stop the separation of families alongside the border, and family separations have continued during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current administration’s family separation policy at the border has never ended. They are now using this global health crisis to expel all asylum seekers at our borders and separate families alongside the border because they are extended family members of the child they are traveling with. They do not qualify as an alien family, according to Executive Order 13841, because they do not have a parental relationship with the child.

In a recent court filing from October 2020, the American Civil Liberties Union [ACLU] said they have been unable to contact the parents of at least 545 children separated by the current administration, leaving the children to live with sponsors throughout the United States. According to the ACLU, about two-thirds of the parents of the 545 children are believed to be in their countries of origin.  We must fight for the reunification of children who are separated from their families because of  the President’s “zero-tolerance policy.”
