IT IS A NATIONAL OUTRAGE MILITARY FAMILIES GOING HUNGRY, LIVING IN POVERTY! WE CAN HELP!

The Issue

IF YOU ARE PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, THEN IT'S WAY PAST TIME WE STAND UP FOR THE MEN/WOMEN WHO HAVE FOUGHT FOR US AND ARE FIGHTING FOR US NOW TO KEEP US FREE!

THEY FOUGHT FOR US, AND IT'S TIME WE FOUGHT FOR THEM!

There is not enough money in the world to compensate our Men/Women of the Military that are willing to sacrifice their lives for our freedom. How are military and veteran families among our most vulnerable and struggling with poverty and hunger? How can we justify raising defense spending without giving our military a cost of living raise, protecting and strengthening services like SNAP (food stamps) that help them? Military pay can start as low as $18,000 that’s just above the average for fast-food workers, which is about $18,880 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “There is an ethic in the military about not leaving anybody behind, but the truth is we are leaving them behind.”  “Aren’t these the folks we owe the most to, and we’re giving them the least?” Active Duty Members and Veterans have made great sacrifices for our country. They have protected and served the nation, yet many return home and struggle with poverty and economic insecurity. There are roughly 22.5 million veterans in the United States—many above the retirement age—and more than 1.4 million of them are living in poverty. About 2.8 million Americans have served in uniform since 9/11, and an estimated 200,000 are unemployed, according to government numbers. Many veterans that find work are in the retail, security, manufacturing, warehousing, and the food and beverage industry, sectors which often pay minimum wage. When service members return from active duty, they’re more likely to face severe financial challenges than civilians. According to a recent survey carried out by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, Vets are almost twice as likely to carry some credit card debt from month-to-month (58%) than civilians (34%). Even minor financial issues can spiral into bigger problems for veterans. Military veterans who report having relatively minor financial problems, such as bouncing a check or going over their credit limit, are four times more likely to become homeless within the next year than veterans without such problems, according to a survey of 1,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans published in the American Journal of Public Health last year. The Armed Forces are preparing for war in Iraq, but the Armed Forces are also struggling with more domestic issue. By the pentagon's own estimate, thousands of military families live in poverty. Despite recent salary increase many enlisted Men/Women say they can't afford food or other basic needs.

How can you help correct this injustice to our service men and women? First, the Military Hunger Prevention Act introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives would remove barriers to SNAP eligibility for currently serving military families. You can read more at SafeInAmerica.org, and contact your Congressional representatives to tell them to protect military families. Second, you can get involved with local organizations that serve military families and veterans and help show them that we value their service and refuse to leave them behind and you can go to SafeInAmerica.org

We are one of the richest countries in the world, but the Men/Women of our Military are struggling to make ends meet, and their families are going hungry. Imagine you're in Iraq right now, and you're worried whether or not your kids are able to have a meal. We are asking that Congress, Senate, Department Of Defense, and Veterans Administration for: Better Pay, Benefits, Services for all Men/Women of the Military and their families, Better Benefits, and Services for Veterans, Shelters for the homeless veterans, Better VA Hospital Care for Veterans, Better Treatment for PTSD, Better Treatment for Disabled Veterans.
