Martina Desjardins started this petition to Trent University

Online classes have become commonplace because of COVID-19.  Trent University has said that they are doing their best to make sure that all of its students are getting the education they deserve and are paying for, however, when it comes to students registered with Student Accessibility Services, Trent is falling short.

For months, SAS students, such as myself, have been struggling unnecessarily because the online environment is not designed to support students with disabilities.  The SAS office provided instruction to Trent's professors regarding how to better support and to provide accommodations to their students during this time.  However, many professors are not doing so.  There has been a miscommunication between the SAS office and the professors, but each group can only do so much as they both only have a certain amount of power within the University.  Ultimately, this is an issue that the President of Trent and the associated administration needs to deal with.  ADHD students, dyslexic students, deaf or hard-of-hearing students and many more have accommodations that we are legally and ethically entitled to and are not being provided.

The accommodations that are provided are not adequate enough.  Transcripts, if they are even released to the students who need them, are nearly impossible to understand as professors are not editing them as they should be.  Recorded lectures are not being provided by everyone, despite SAS students being entitled to them.  On top of that, these concerns have been brought to not only the SAS office but also to some of the Administration.  Nothing has been done to fix this problem.  If students with disabilities are not being provided the accommodations they need in order to receive their education on the same level as their abled peers, it is discriminatory.  Trent needs to take this matter seriously as it is negatively impacting a large part of the Trent student body unnecessarily.  We pay to attend this institution just like everyone else and we have a right to be able to have accessible education.

There is only so much that the SAS office and the professors can do; they are both incredibly overwhelmed and while they are trying to help the students who need it, they simply are not being provided with the resources to do so.  Students should have been notified that some accommodations would not be offered and Trent University should have made the effort to make sure that there were measures put in place to make sure these changes did not negatively effect its student body.
