The Issue

To Airlines, Baggage Handling Companies, and Aviation Authorities,

For Australians and New Zealanders, travel is more than a privilege, it’s a way of life, and a deeply pleasurable pastime. Whether exploring our stunning landscapes, reconnecting with loved ones, or embarking on adventures abroad, the freedom to travel is ingrained in our identity. In essence it’s part of who we are and should be inclusive, safe, and empowering for everyone.

Yet for wheelchair users, this fundamental experience is overshadowed by fear and frustration due to the careless handling of mobility aids by airlines and baggage handlers. Wheelchairs are not simply luggage—they are essential extensions of independence, dignity, and mobility. When they are damaged or mistreated, the impact.

Yet for many wheelchair users, this experience is overshadowed by stress and uncertainty due to the mishandling of mobility aids. A wheelchair is not just equipment—it is a vital extension of a person’s body and independence. When damaged or mistreated, the physical and emotional impact is devastating and profound. Every traveller deserves to embark on their journey with confidence, not fear that their essential mobility device may be lost, broken, or handled without care.

We are calling on the aviation industry to work alongside the disability community to raise standards that ensure respectful, and responsible practices which reflect the value of all travellers.

We believe positive, lasting change is possible through partnership and proactive commitment.

We propose: Specialised staff training focused on the correct handling of mobility aids, informed by people with lived experience.

Clear accountability protocols for when damage does occur, including timely resolution and compensation pathways.

Enhanced accessibility procedures that prioritise safety, dignity, and ease at every stage, from check-in to arrival.

Ongoing collaboration with wheelchair users to ensure solutions are practical, inclusive, and genuinely effective.

Travel should feel exciting, not exhausting. Together, we can build an aviation environment where all passengers feel valued, respected, and supported.

Please sign the petition and support this call for meaningful progress, because accessibility is not optional, it’s a human right. Also follow the campaign at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572206995675 and please give a thumbs up and subscribe.
