Travel in NI for those with Disabilities and Carers

The Issue

In Northern Ireland, disabled people can get a half price smart pass. Over 65’s can get a free pass. Many disabled people need a carer to accompany them, yet carers must pay full price. Many carers have to travel to access things, or to get to the person they care for, but NI does not have a pass for carers.
When you look at the Republic of Ireland, disabled people get a free pass and also can have a companion with them. Those in receipt of carers allowance can also get a free pass.
We need Ni to look at the transport system, which in NI is quite dated. Especially in the current crisis people, can’t afford this and using public transport is a lifeline for many in so many ways.
There is so much talk of cross border travel being encouraged, but there is very little clarity about what disabled people and carers are entitled to when from NI.
