Transition CBE School Grading System from Numerical to Percentages and Letters

Transition CBE School Grading System from Numerical to Percentages and Letters
The Issue
I am a firm believer in the potential of education and its power to shape lives. Having experienced an educational system that scores students based on a simple numbering scheme (1,2,3,4), I find it both confusing and unhelpful. Our grading system fails to offer clear insight into learning progress, and as a result, it can be more of an obstacle than an aide in preparing students for opportunities beyond middle school as well as high school, including higher educational pursuits at university level.
Quantifying student mastery using a grading system that combines percentages and letters provides a clearer, more interpretive frame of reference. It allow for nuance, showcasing the difference between almost perfect and perfect, good and very good, needs improvement and severely lacking. According to a study by the University of Alberta, students find percentage-based grading more motivating. Overall, students feel that such a system alerts them to what they can do better and sharpens their focus on studies leading to significant improvement.
Let's work to make our grading system more comprehensive and suited to the diverse needs of students in today's educational landscape. Sign this petition to support the transition among all Calgary Board of Education schools, from a 1,2,3,4 based scoring method to a percentage and letter grading approach. Raise your hands for coherence, understanding, and a more precise reflection of students' capabilities. Sign the petition today.
