The Issue

My grandson, who loves playing football, was recently kicked out of his team because he struggles with ADHD. It was heartbreaking to watch him be excluded from something that brings him so much joy and helps him grow. He's not alone; many children in West Yorkshire with ADHD and autism face similar challenges, being misunderstood or inadequately supported by their coaches.

Coaches play a crucial role in the development of young athletes, not just in terms of their skills, but also in terms of their personal and social development. However, a lack of understanding and training in conditions like ADHD and autism can lead to unfair treatment and exclusion. This is particularly concerning as inclusive sports can significantly benefit children with ADHD and autism by improving their physical health, social skills, and self-esteem.

By mandating training for all sports coaches in West Yorkshire on ADHD and autism, we can ensure that children with these conditions receive the support they need. This training would educate coaches on how to effectively engage with these children, utilize strategies that work best for them, and ultimately create a more inclusive and understanding environment.

According to the National Autistic Society, over 700,000 people in the UK are autistic, while ADHD Action states that around 5% of people in the UK have ADHD. With such significant numbers, it’s vital for sports organizations to embrace inclusivity by ensuring their staff are competent in interacting with and supporting every child, regardless of their neurodiversity.

This training should include practical advice on how to adapt sessions, communicate effectively with children who have these conditions, and understand the unique strengths and challenges they may present.

Let's advocate for a change that paves the way for inclusivity in sports for all children in West Yorkshire. Please sign this petition to mandate ADHD and autism training for all ball coaches in our community. Together, we can create a supportive environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive through sport.
