Preserve commuter parking along Toronto's subway line

The Issue

The transfer of land occupied by TTC commuter parking from the City of Toronto to Build Toronto will have serious consequences for Toronto residents and commuters. The first parking lot, located near the Wilson subway station, was transferred on December 1, 2016, immediately creating a major parking shortage for commuters from Ward 10 and others from across the GTA who rely on the lot to be able to take transit into the downtown core. Commitments have been made by the City to transfer the remaining Wilson station lots, along with the lot at Downsview and others in the near future.

This unfortunate decision by the city has created a number of immediate challenges for the community:

- It forces hundreds of would-be commuters to drive into the downtown core instead.

- It creates a serious illegal parking problem in the residential and commercial properties surrounding the station

-it creates dangerous backlog of cars lining up to secure spots in the remaining lots during rush hour.

We, the undersigned, urge Toronto City Council to take immediate action to address this situation through discussion, planning and creative problem solving to create relief parking options for commuters.

In the longer term, we ask that Build Toronto include commuter parking in any redevelopment of these lands.
