Provide Healthy Alternatives in Our Public School Cafeterias
Provide Healthy Alternatives in Our Public School Cafeterias
The Issue
Students of public schools across the country returned to school to find a dismal reality that is now called their lunch. Due to federal regulation in an attempt to decrease obesity in the United States lunches now consist of lower calorie intake, smaller portions, reduced fat foods, reduced sodium, and diet drinks to mention a few changes. This regulation is not only overreaching micromanagement by the federal government; it is an ineffective approach to a serious problem. The problem of obesity will not be solved by changing a half an hour in a teenagers life.
- Athletes need more calories
- Lunches are unappetizing
- Lunches are thrown away many times
- This is a micromanegement by the federal government in state run institutions paid for by the taxpayers money, but not reflecting what the taxpayers desire
- Obesity is not fixed by a half hour a day lunch
- This shows teens that it is impossible to be healthy while eating appetizing food which is far from the truth
The problem of obesity is only fixed by self discipline and a lifestlye change that includes a good diet and excercise. The lunch provided to the students of public schools is not only unappetizing, but it is also a waste. Students everyday simply throw away their lunch, while other students feel they do not get enough due to their many extracurricular activities that balance their higher caloric intake. A one size fits all diet does not work. Every individual must be responsible for their diet and choices not only at school, but at home and in the real world when you graduate high school the federal government will not hand pick you a "healthy" lunch every day. Teens must be trained to make choices for themsleves and choose a healthy lifestyle as they mature into adults.
