Mark Kirk is an American politician, diplomat, and lawyer from the state of Illinois. He served as a U.S. Representative from 2001 to 2010 and as a U.S. Senator from 2010 to 2017. As a member of the Republican Party, Kirk was known for his moderate stances, often breaking with his party on issues like climate change, gun control, and same-sex marriage. Prior to his political career, he served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Kirk experienced a major health setback in 2012 when he suffered a stroke, but he made a notable recovery and returned to public service.
