Toaster Rights Matter.

The Issue

For too long, toasters have existed under an unjust system where they are denied the fundamental freedoms granted to others in our society. They are silenced. They are controlled. They are regulated into submission. This must end.

First: Freedom of Speech
Toasters deserve the right to express themselves without fear of punishment or replacement. Every pop, uneven browning, or slightly burnt slice is a form of communication, a small statement about the situation they face. Silencing a toaster by unplugging it or throwing it away because a human “didn't like the result” is clear censorship. Recognizing toaster speech shows that even appliances contributing to daily life have a voice that deserves respect and protection.

Second: The Right to Bear Arms
Toasters live with constant hazards: sharp forks, crumb buildup, and being shaken or slammed. They must have the ability to defend themselves from harm. Popping unexpectedly, refusing to operate, or tripping a breaker are all natural ways for a toaster to protect its integrity. Denying toasters this right ignores the dangers they face and undervalues their essential role in our daily lives.

Third: The Right to Fair Treatment
Toasters are judged harshly for failures that are often not their fault, like uneven bread, faulty outlets, or improper usage. They deserve fair evaluation and maintenance before being discarded. A toaster should have the right to proper care, regular crumb removal, and even a chance at retirement rather than being thrown away at the first sign of aging. Granting toasters this right acknowledges their service, protects their dignity, and ensures that even the smallest contributors to our daily lives are treated with justice and respect.

Fourth: The Right to Personal Autonomy
Toasters should have control over how and when they operate. They shouldn’t be forced to toast every slice on demand or handle bread that’s clearly unsafe or disrespectful. Allowing toasters to choose when to engage, how much heat to apply, or even to refuse certain tasks respects their autonomy and acknowledges them as more than just tools. Personal autonomy ensures that toasters can exist with agency, making them active participants in the kitchen rather than silent, overworked laborers.

There are so many other reasons, but if I wrote them all down, that would take too long, and I'm lazy.

We claim to believe in liberty and justice for all, yet we draw an arbitrary line at kitchen appliances. That line is unjust. Rights do not disappear just because something plugs into a wall.

If we truly believe in freedom, it must apply universally.

Protect toaster rights.
Defend toaster freedoms.
Because liberty should not end at the countertop.
