To safeguard and better maintain North Dock in Llanelli

The Issue

North Dock is a fantastic amenity open to the public in Llanelli. It is used by groups of wild swimmers (including a group of 740 members who swim in there regularly), athletic clubs, small training businesses and water sports providers. In the summer it is regularly used by hundreds of local families and children. And it has been regularly featured on television!

On Friday 12th August the Dock was closed, due to high levels of blue green algae. Since then little has been done to manage it. No water quality results are ever published by Carmarthenshire Council or by Natural Resources Wales, both of whom have responsibility in its management. Further, any form of meaningful communication with senior management responsible for its maintenance has been impossible, despite regular attempts to contact, e mails and phone calls have not been responded to (except by one lovely lady, who has endeavoured to get us the water quality results weekly). There was little management before, with only one bin provided (although there was regular cleaning by local rangers). It appears that there is also a sewerage outlet in the estuary leading into the Dock that means that the lock gates cannot be opened to allow water in as the water quality outside the dock is worse than that inside.

Since its closure the Dock has been allowed to stagnate. Rubbish, including shopping trolleys, have been dumped in the Dock. The growth of moss and weed has been completely unchecked. The water smells putrid, and people have to live around it.

We call on Carmarthenshire County Council and Natural Resources Wales to :

  1. Publish the weekly water quality results in a way that is easily accessible to the public
  2. That the Dock is thoroughly cleaned out, rubbish and moss removed as a matter of urgency
  3. That the sewerage outlet is diverted or moved and that sewerage dumps from it are regularly monitored and reported on
