#SHARKSALIVE
El problema
We the undersigned respectfully request the inclusion of Silky and Thresher Sharks to Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES).
We refuse to live in a world where Silky and Thresher sharks are on the verge of extinction. When these species are alive, flourishing, and healthy, they are able to do their part in regulating the health of our ocean’s ecosystems. The health of the oceans, more than anything determine the health of our planet and therefore determines the health of humanity. Consequently, silky and thresher sharks ensure our prosperity and health by maintaining the food chain in ecological balance. Therefore, we must do our part, to in return protect these species that have been doing their part to nurture the oceans and our planet.
By including Silky and Thresher sharks to Appendix II, we can take initiative in a very necessary step in ensuring the protection of these species. This inclusion will guarantee protection for these species and “look-alike species”. Inclusion will also necessitate authorization of an export permit for international trade of shark fins and shark meat. Export permits will decelerate the estimated 500,00 to 1.5 million silky sharks traded globally per year.
No other international or regional protections for thresher sharks exist, despite WCPFC and IATTC for these species. That exposes them to unregulated fisheries over much of their range, with no controls over the number that can be caught, sold, or traded every year.
It has been estimated that the population of pelagic sharks has declined 90% in the past fifty years. If business continues as usual, this will lead to the extinction of this apex predator.
This is of particular interest to society as a whole, as the decimation of sharks will drastically effect our well being.
Sign our petition calling on the Presidents of Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua to support listing silky sharks, under Appendix II of CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).
We plan on delivering signatures in mid-September so please sign the petition and share it as widely as you can.
Please ensure the inclusion of Silky and Thresher sharks to Appendix II to provide the greatest possible benefits to our oceans and therefore to humanity as a whole.
