Title: Protect Our Youth: Remove "That Sugar Film" from Australian High Schools

The issue

For a decade, "That Sugar Film" has been screened in schools, perpetuating misleading information about sugar consumption and its effects. As dietitians (find us here) who specialise in eating disorders, we have seen how this film can trigger life-threatening conditions in vulnerable young individuals. The inaccuracies presented in the film create harmful misconceptions about food and can contribute to the development of unhealthy relationships with eating.

21% increase in eating disorders in Australia since 2012, and 27% of people with eating disorders are under 19.

We call upon educational authorities to take immediate action in removing "That Sugar Film" from the list of approved resources in Australian schools.

The fear-mongering approach employed by "That Sugar Film" exacerbates the risk of children and adolescents developing disordered eating behaviours. Moreover, the individuals presented as "experts" in the film lack qualifications and expertise in the field of health and nutrition, making their educational value highly questionable.

Over the past decade, we have received countless reports of the harm caused by this film, indicating that it has no place in our educational system. It is imperative that we prioritise the mental and physical well-being of our youth by removing "That Sugar Film" from Australian schools. There are better, safer ways to help children enjoy a nutritious diet and maintain a healthy relationship with food.

We urge educational authorities to take decisive action in addressing this issue and ensuring that accurate and evidence-based resources are utilised in our schools. By signing this petition, you stand with us in advocating for the removal of "That Sugar Film" to protect the health and future of our youth.
