As a small retail business owner who is just trying to make a living and support my family, I've watched helplessly as shoplifting becomes an unchecked crime, eroding the financial stability of our community stores. The rising cost of doing business is already a heavy burden, and without stricter penalties, shoplifters continue to operate with impunity.

We need tougher laws on shoplifting and antisocial behaviour in retail settings, holding parents legally accountable for their children's unlawful actions. Parents should be fined ten times the value of any items their children steal or damage. For adult shoplifters, similar penalties should apply. This will not only deter offenders but also encourage parents to instil responsibility in their children.

Moreover, shop owners should have increased authority to address shoplifting and antisocial behaviour on their premises. More power needs to be given to shop owners to act swiftly and effectively to prevent theft and maintain a safe shopping environment for patrons and staff alike.
