Hello. Before I break the news, I'd like to inform you that we are still making good progress on this petition to get more classic Disney Channel content released to DVD, with 1,311 signatures as of this writing. If anyone reading can share this petition with friends to help increase that amount, I'd really appreciate it.
Now, you may have read my last update, which states that because Disney had no additional plans for 4K Blu-ray releases of live-action catalog titles, it seemed like they were about to cancel new physical media releases. Well, there's now a follow-up to this story confirming that as of right now, Disney does NOT plan on killing physical media formats anytime soon. Read this article on The Digital Bits for more info: https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/081120-1500
In this article, you will find a quote from a Disney spokesperson stating that they don't plan on halting new releases for any particular format, which means that Disney is still committed to new physical movie releases. However, this still doesn't change that there are currently no plans for any new 4K live action catalog releases in addition to the two that are already planned (Hocus Pocus and Home Alone), but there's still hope for plans to change for the better.
Personally, my family doesn't own any 4K TVs, let alone 4K UHD disc players, so I'm not in the right authority to comment on the significance of new 4K releases, especially catalog titles, but either way it's still good to hear that Disney doesn't plan on pulling the plug on new physical media yet, as it shows that there's still a chance for more Disney Channel content to be released on DVD (both old and new).
Now, I know this petition is focused on bringing Disney Channel content to DVD, not catalog live action films to 4K Blu-ray, but this is still an important story to share with all of you to help build up hope. There are more things fans want Disney to release on physical media than just those two categories (for example: a Blu-ray/DVD release of The Mandalorian, a Disney+ Original series).
But we still need to take action by contacting Disney to prove to them we want more physical media releases, especially Disney Channel Original shows and movies that still haven't made it to DVD yet. For ways to directly contact Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, read this previous update, if you haven't already contacted them: https://www.change.org/p/the-walt-disney-company-release-the-old-disney-channel-shows-and-movies-on-dvd/u/26720962
Hopefully we can all give Disney the courage they need to get around to releasing more classic Disney Channel DVDs (and live action catalog titles on 4K UHD Blu-ray, for those who are interested).
