After Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15, 2021, the US government froze Da Afghanistan Bank (Afghanistan's Central Bank) reserves.

Knowing that these reserves are the people money, this freeze has crippled the commercial banking sector and the entire economy. During the past one month, the Afghan economy has sustained a loss of well above USD 1 billion. 

In addition, the mass exodus of middle class Afghans, including the evacuation facilitated by the international community, had a cash drain in hundreds of millions as a consequence. 

Given that above 70% of the Afghanistan population already lived under poverty line, these new measures taken by the US are highly likely to lead to a total collapse of the Afghan economy. Surely, if this happens, the effects of this will bring new security challenges to Afghanistan and the world. 

We strongly demand that the US immediately lift the freeze from the Afghan reserves and prevent a humanitarian and security crisis.

We call on the human rights organisations and activists to join hands and prevent an irreversible humanitarian crisis.
