The University of Auckland's city campus has only 34 secure bicycle racks for over 30,000 staff and students of campus. We need many more.

There are numerous other racks around campus, but they aren't secure and are prone to theft. Even the one secure area, known as "the cage", has suffered from break-ins and thefts as it isn't adequately secure. These thefts are increasing, and it is putting people off from cycling to campus.

Cycling is growing in popularity as a form of transport in Auckland, which benefits us all. Cycling reduces the number of polluting vehicles on our roads while reducing the space required on the road for each commuter. It also greatly helps with New Zealand's "Clean Green" image. One of the best ways to promote continued growth of cycling in Auckland is to allow cyclists to store their bikes with peace of mind knowing they will not be stolen.

The University of Auckland strives to be a world leading university. One of the biggest issues worldwide at the moment is that of environmental impact. In order to be a world leading university, UoA should aim to lead in all fields, including reducing environmental impact. A great way to achieve this is to promote cycling, and an easy way promote that is by increasing secure storage options on campus.

We are calling for the University to install more secure bicycle storage areas, and to do so quickly.
