Sign the UCLU Pride in Sport Pledge
The Issue
According to a recent report by the National Union of Students:
- 38% of LGBT+ students participating in sport at their university or college aren't out with teammates and coaches.
- 1 in 7 students are put off participating in sport at university because of homophobia, biphobia or transphobia.
- 47% of LGBT+ students who do not participate in sport find the culture around sport alienating or unwelcoming.
The aim of the Pride in UCLU Sport campaign is to tackle LGBT+ discrimination in UCLU sport.
Help UCLU change these statistics by signing your name (with your club name and committee position in the 'why is this important to you' section if applicable) and taking the Pride in UCLU Sport pledge.
The pledge:
“I pledge to lead the UCL sports community in welcoming all persons and making them feel equal regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, biological sex, ethnicity or any disabilities. I shall not use insults or make derogatory comments regarding any of these categories as the club/society realizes such remarks can be hurtful and damaging. I understand that in order to advance the inclusive atmosphere of UCL and its union, I must do my part to make all fellow players feel respected on and off the field.”
Sign your name to:
- Show your commitment to eradicating all forms of discrimination at UCL.
- - Support your teammates and fellow UCLU athletes.
- - Show your pride in UCLU sport.
Other features of the Pride in Sport Campaign include:
- An open discussion Monday 24th February in The Study, 25 Gordon Street where anyone can come along to share their good or bad experiences and any criticism of the campaign itself.
- Setting up of an anonymous reporting system for anyone who has witnessed or been subject to homophobic, biphobic or transphobic behaviour, and also for reporting any other incidents a person may not feel they can discuss with a club's committee members.
- The inclusion of anti-discrimination training into the UCLU captains and committee members training for 2014/15
- The introduction of a Diversity and Inclusion Award that will be awarded to one club or society in Sports, Arts or General Interest that shows outstanding effort to promote an environment free of discrimination in their activities.
Look out for posters and leaflets with more information!
Thank you for showing you commitment and taking a stand against discrimination,
The UCLU Activities Network Executive
