The Issue

The Tenderloin, San Francisco's neighborhood with the highest density of children, people with disabilities and second highest density of seniors needs a grocery store. With over 60 corner stores that sell liquor, tobacco, and unhealthy sweets the Tenderloin suffers from preventable diseases that don't exist in more affluent parts of the city where there are grocery stores with culturally appropriate healthy options. Neighborhoods without grocery stores are often referred to as "food deserts" but the term "food apartheid" more appropriately applies here as the Tenderloin, a community of immigrants and people of color, has been systematically denied access to healthy food. But community members say no more! The Food Justice League of San Francisco, a Tenderloin resident based coalition of immigrants, low income people and seniors has decided to take action and fight for a grocery store that serves the whole community.
