The Issue
The meat and dairy industry play a huge role in the destruction of this planet. The various charities that work to protect the environment seem to be ignoring this fact.
Every minute, 7 million pounds of excrement are produced by animals raised for food in the US. Methane is 25-100 times more destructive than CO2 on a 20 year timeframe, and cows produce 150 billion gallons of methane per day. Livestock and their byproducts account for 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. (COWSPIRACY 2014)
Agriculture is responsible for 80-90% of US water consumption. Livestock and livestock feed occupy 1/3 of the earths land.
We could see fishless oceans by 2048 (COWSPIRACY 2014)
THESE FACTS CANNOT BE IGNORED.
The amount of meat and dairy we consume on a daily basis is out of control. As a young person I have been completely unaware of this as meat and dairy are a part of my normal life. Educating people about the effects taking place on this planet without their knowing is what is crucial. For what you do not know, you cannot act on.
As a meat lover myself, I am not proposing the difficult task of veganism. All I am asking is that we raise awareness and make the decision to cut down our individual intake of meat and dairy.
There are so many benefits to the individuals too! Cutting out meat and dairy for 2 days a week for example would lead to a much healthier population as meat and dairy are so fatty. A plant based diet increases the vitamin and mineral intake of individuals and is proven to leave people feeling refreshed and energized. This decision would massively reduce our nations meat and dairy consumption as a whole. A definite step in the right direction for humanity.
Climate change is the biggest problem facing our generation today and it can not be ignored.
The dairy industry is the biggest contributor.
If this generation does not act on big problems, in smart ways, nobody will.
Sweden have introduced a meat tax, it would not be a bad idea for our country to follow suit. Take a step in the right direction.
