Constitutional Women representation in Parliament, Samoa.

The issue

Women for Parliament, Samoa.

We have started this petition, on behalf of Women for Parliament, as we believe in having fair representation of women in parliament.

We are proud to be Samoan, daughters, sisters, wives, aunties, mothers and grandmothers. We aspire to be leading women in parliament one day, in order to make a difference for our beautiful island nation. We stand for women representation in parliament, we stand for our constitution, and we stand for due process in selecting our next government.

Today, we are disheartened to see section 44.1A of our constitution not being upheld, and women in parliament being underrepresented. “Subject to this Article, women Members of the Legislative Assembly shall: (a) consist of a minimum of 10% of the Members of the Legislative Assembly”.

Regardless of whatever happened getting to this point, parliament as it stands only includes 9.8% women. No matter which way we look at it, 5 of 51 women is only 9.8%.

Today, we Samoan women are fighting for our constitutional right to have a minimum of 10% of members of parliament to be women. Today, we are standing for our sixth woman in parliament.

Please stand by us to support our future, our constitution, and our women in parliament.

We only have TODAY and TOMORROW to fight for what’s right, and on Monday the 31st of May, we will present this petition to the Supreme Court in Samoa as we request our fair representation in parliament.

Yours sincerely,

Women for Parliament.

God bless.
