We believe that Mr. Walker's conduct as a teacher needs to be remedied for the following reasons:
1. He has a poor teaching method and structure. He fails to teach core curriculum in a coherent, understandable and structured manner.
2. He has repeatedly shown that his emotions require management. There have been multiple cases when he, in a fit of pique acted in an inappropriate manner with student's personal property eg: Throwing pens, books and pencils which belonged to students. So far, he has failed to provide an apology or explanation to which he has behaved this way. Examples:
a) Has the unfortunate habit of using wooden rulers to hit tables with great force, often within inches of students. We find this behavior not only to be distracting due to the loud noises and unprofessional, but also dangerous as he has broken rulers in the past and splinters could go into a student's eye or other vulnerable parts, as he does this so close to students.
b) He has repeatedly shown lack of emotional control. There have been multiple instances where Mr. Walker has torn up books, worksheets and thrown pens that belonged to a student due to minor disagreements or mistakes. There also has been a recorded incident where Mr. Walker used a marker to draw on a $400 basketball WITHOUT asking for the owners permission, creating indelible marks that cannot be removed. This not only shows poor judgement, it also underlines the fact that Mr. Walker needs to make rapid and drastic adjustments to his behavior as a teacher. As a member of the GSIS staff, one of the most highly respected schools in Hong Kong, he is acting as a role model for students all around GSIS and the evidence above has shown he has failed to live up to this role.
Although we believe Mr. Walker has the potential to become an excellent teacher, we would like him to adjust his teaching methods and behavior as teacher. We feel that an adjustment would not only be beneficial to us as learning students, but also send a message to parents and prospective students that German Swiss International School listens to their students and takes the initiative to improve their learning experience. I thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I hope that the school can have a discussion with Mr. Walker about his behavior and hopefully reach a solution that all parties can agree on.
Yours faithfully, a Year 9 student.
