Since the dawn of time, the physical education department has forced students of all body types to feel uncomfortable in their own skin. The swimming unit as a whole is not necessarily beneficial nor effective to one's health after elementary school. Once you've reached the point of middle school, most kids have the ability to swim, so therefore all years after the elementary stage is useless for kids to involuntarily swim. Additionally the only reason to have an actual swimming unit is for lifeguarding. But since there's an actual class for that, it gets rid of all reason for a swim unit. Now of course just like any other physical education unit, there will be those who oppose, however no other unit forces people to be in an environment that is unbearable like the swimming unit does. Therefore, the swimming unit during the grades of 6th through 12th should at most be optional because school should always be described as a safe place, but take into consideration the kids with terrible insecurities, and the kids with anxiety and other unbearable problems that make it terrifying and awful to actually participate in the swim unit.  Apart from this, think about the students that have sat through the swimming unit for years, and already know how to swim and more. Children that don't care about swimming shouldn't have to learn how to do the breaststroke if they're not at all intending on doing this in the future.
