Investigate private student loan lenders for predatory lending practices

Okemos, MI, United States
Created September 25, 2011

The Issue

Private student loan companies in the United States are lending billions of dollars to students without the means to pay them back, resulting in defaults and ruined credit histories. Young students do not have the life experience to know exactly what they are signing and are erroneously told that college is a guarantee of a good future. These lenders give out obscenely excessive loans with high interest rates to kids without jobs, without co-signers, and without an inkling of future ability to pay back. This is similar to giving mortgages to people who could not pay them back, resulting in major economic instability. Student loans will be the next bubble to burst. These lenders should be investigated and regulated appropriately to ensure that future students are not taken advantage of.

Jessica AustinPetition StarterWhen I graduated from college, I didn’t have a goal. I wandered around aimlessly for a few years, hoping to find inspiration. Even after I entered my graduate program (Public Administration, specializing in nonprofit organizations), I didn’t have a good grasp of where I’d land. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks: I love to organize. I love to advocate. I love to bring people together and fight for a cause tirelessly. Not bad for a public administration student! I am most passionate about animal welfare – speaking up for our friends who truly have no voice. Additionally, having worked in public health and health policy for 7 years, I am committed to making the United States health system accessible, truthful, accountable, and compassionate. I live in Okemos, Michigan with my wonderful husband, Roger, and our three cats, Monty, Dexter, and Miles. Please drop me a line if you have a cause you think I’d be interested in, or just to chat. Thanks for looking me up!
