Rename Fort Polk to Fort Honoré

Rename Fort Polk to Fort Honoré
The Issue
Fort Polk is a United States Army installation located in Vernon Parish in Louisiana. It was named after Leonidas Polk, a Confederate general in the American Civil War, making Fort Polk one of ten U.S. Army installations named for Confederate generals.
As part of recommendations for renaming bases and Defense Department property that honors Confederate leaders, we petition for Fort Polk to be renamed to Fort Honoré, in the honor of retired lieutenant general Russel L. "The Ragin' Cajun" Honoré who served as the 33rd commanding general of the U.S. First Army at Fort Gillem, Georgia.
Honoré is best known for serving as commander of Joint Task Force Katrina responsible for coordinating military relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina–affected areas across the Gulf Coast and as the 2nd Infantry Division's commander while stationed in South Korea.
This cause is important because we have a chance to honor a veteran of color who heeded Louisiana’s call. Honoré is a hero to Americans in the great state of Louisiana. His leadership saved lives after Hurricane Katrina affected cities and parishes along the Gulf Coast. His honorable deed is worthy to replace the name of a Confederate General who owned slaves and fought to preserve a state’s right to enslave African Americans. Using the Fort Honoré name will represent the best ideals of this nation.
