Prioritize Public Transit in Ontario and the GTA

Prioritize Public Transit in Ontario and the GTA
Why this petition matters
The Greater Toronto Area is rapidly growing and becoming more populated. Because of urban sprawl, the GTA is expanding into areas that were once rural. Towns like Markham and Vaughan are looking more like cities, rather than suburbs, and are almost indistinguishable from the city of Toronto. To put into perspective how big the GTA is, it has reached a land size of over 9 times that of New York City, and over 4 times the size of London, England. The population in the GTA is expected to reach over 10 million people by the year 2030, which is larger in population than both New York City and London right now. With so many commuters relying on public transit, mostly YRT and TTC, these public transit systems are not developed enough to accommodate the amount of passengers they serve every day. This is especially true when you compare our public transit system to those major cities. Right now there is a 7.4 km subway expansion from Finch North to Highway 7, however there needs to be a much broader and more robust advancement in the public transit system to accommodate the 1.4 million+ people that use public transit in the GTA daily.
