With the majority of news and social media bombarding us with devastating atrocities, dire predictions and divisive politics along with other soaps tending to favour dark and gritty storylines, Neighbours is an honest and authentic breath of fresh air, transporting viewers to sunny Melbourne for a daily 22-minute catch up with good neighbours and good friends.

Modern life can be extremely isolating, with far fewer in-person interactions than before the COVID-19 pandemic. It therefore stands to reason that, in the modern era, people tend to connect more deeply with TV shows, particularly if they are aired daily and have been broadcast for decades. On a personal note, I have a severe disability and have to rely on carers to help with the most basic tasks. The care industry has a notoriously high rate of turnover, meaning I'm frequently saying goodbye to carers and getting used to new ones. Neighbours is an extremely comforting source of consistency for me and many others. No matter what each day holds, we loyal Neighbours viewers know we can put everything aside for 22 minutes when we hear that iconic theme tune.
