Push through the passing of House Bill 630 (Fair Employment Practices Act)
Push through the passing of House Bill 630 (Fair Employment Practices Act)
The Issue
The Declaration of Independence states that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men were created equal.” If every citizen is equal, shouldn’t every citizen be promised the same protection? Unfortunately, Georgia struggles with answering this question. Georgia political leaders failed its Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender citizens systematically denying them equal employment rights.
Georgia House Bill 630, now known as the “Fair Employment Practices Act”, works to amend Title 45 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated in order to include sexuality and gender identity in laws against discrimination against public officers and employees.
The bill was tabled on February 21, 2012 and was harshly criticized under the word of one woman, Tanya Ditty of Concerned Women for America who compared homosexuals to pedophiles and necrophilia. However, her opposition was the only vocal one in the hearing for the bill. Another hearing was held on February 27 and the only speaker was State Representative Karla Drenner, openly gay and a primary supporter and sponsor of the bill.
In other words, if this bill is passed, the LGBT community will no longer suffer open harassment and discrimination without reciprocation against the harasser. An employer will not have the right to refuse an open position to a member of the LGBT community on the sole ground of sexuality or gender identity. This bill is an enormous step towards changing current legislature to provide for acceptance and safeguarding of the LGBT community in the state of Georgia.
House Bill 630 will receive a final vote on the Georgia legislature’s crossover day, March 7 for the 2012 year. However, if the bill is put aside, efforts will continue to get this important, necessary amendment made to Georgia law under “Fair Employment Practices Act.” Community,
Please sign this petition in support of the passing of FEPA, its hopefully successful future in the Georgia Legislation, and the continuation of establishing protection for and securing the civil rights of the LGBT community.
