The future of professional Basketball in Britain is at stake
The Issue
We the supporters of British Basketball have had enough. We don’t want the Americanisation of the league, where profit for the investors is considered more important than the sport itself. We want a professional league that cares for the sport, cares about us the supporters, engages with us and consider our views.
The SLBs model in the 2024/25 season has led to a great competition and is something that can be built on.
The future of the professional game in Britain is at stake. The recent decision by the British Basketball Federation (the governing body of the sport) to sign a 15-year deal with American investors, Marshall Glickman's GBB League Ltd to operate the men's professional league has been made without any consultation with us the supporters. How can it be claimed that the assessment of the bids was carried out by an independent panel and that every key decision has been taken with the involvement of all 12 members of the board, representing every part of the game. Who amongst the 12 sought to represent our wishes? That our views have not been sought by engagement in any consultation shows a shocking lack of respect for the wishes of the dedicated support base, members of the British public that between us have paid many millions of pounds over the years to watch our teams. Surely for the process to be valid the British Basketball Federation should also engage meaningfully with us.
We the supporters request that the implementation of this deal is stopped until a full and proper consultation of all the stakeholders, including the supporters is undertaken. The consultation must aim to gain an understanding of the traditions and history of our local clubs and the wishes of us the supporters. We also insist that this consultation is not a whitewash but is fully transparent. We insist that due regard is given to the outcome of the consultation before the implementation of any significant changes are made by the governing body to the structure of the league.
