The Fukushima Lesson; Have We Learned It Yet?

The Fukushima Lesson; Have We Learned It Yet?
The Issue
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said that it would not certify a nuclear reactor called the AP1000 designed by Westinghouse until the company resolves deficiencies found in the reactor design. The more Westingouse looks into safety issues however, the more problems and miscalculations they discover.
Multiple U.S. utilities have already filed applications with the NRC for approval to use the AP1000 reactor design in six proposed new nuclear power plants.
The NRC said the issues involve the reactor's shield building and the ability of the containment structure to withstand peak pressures in an accident.
The agency said it has asked Westinghouse to provide a more accurate assessment of forces that would act on the reactor's shield building, under both normal and accident conditions, such as the normal weight of a rooftop water tank that would be placed on top of the shield building as well as the potential impact of an earthquake.
Westinghouse has already made many inaccurate assessments and are not an impartial entity therefore they should not be regulating their own reactors.
Obama administration officials have said the U.S. intends to push ahead with efforts to revive the U.S. nuclear power industry while learning lessons from the accident at Fukushima.
WHAT MORE DO WE NEED TO LEARN?
Please sign this petition to ask President Obama to reconsider his plans to revive the U.S. nuclear power industry! If you add a Personal Message it will appear at the end of the letter, so you can add your own personal touch to the letter to the President.
