The Issue

2 days ago, it had been revealed that in official artwork and branding for Arts University Bournemouth's Student Union, AI art had been used. While already bad in its' own right, considering the University being one pushing the creative arts, and having its' own existence threatened by the rise in AI art, the subsequent response from the Student Union has been less than satisfactory to say the least, as they have not only doubled down on their use of AI artwork, but have also talked down to AUB students and alumni, insisting thay we need to accept AI as a 'necessary tool' for creative arts.

This is a major issue on multiple levels:

- AUB, being an arts university itself, is finding its' position as such being threatened by AI artwork and the prevalence of it, and while there are no rules or regulations against currently, they need to be more vigilant in understanding the severe impact this can have, not only on the University, but on the students job prospects that they went to this university for.

- AI artwork has already been proven to have issues with using copyrighted material and intellectual property in its' generations, as it is unable to generate truly original concepts, it will steal from various sources. - AI usage is terrible for the environment. A *single* generation of AI artwork, and AI prompt, or even something as simple as the AI looking up in its' database, uses up massive amounts of energy & water, which has led to towns near data centers to be in crisis mode, with a lack of water and energy available. AUB's stance on Gen-AI has been disappointing already, as from my experience being an AUB Alumni, there have been exhibitions using AI in their work that have disappointed me to see. However, this is a final straw. I feel that the AUBSU president's position should be called into question, as truthfully, how can you say you're working with the best interest of students, and then use the software which is trying to replace them?
