Regulate CNA to resident patient ratio in nursing home care / safe staffing

The Issue

Regulate CNA to resident/ patient ratio in nursing home care Currently in Texas, and in many states, there is not a cap on the number of residents to which one CNA provides care. This is a safety hazard to both the CNA and to resident receiving care. As the elderly population continues to rise, so do worker's compensation claims and lawsuits. Stress, frustration, and fatigue are often felt in the care residents receive from their CNA's. Without a cap, nursing homes and other long term facilities are allowed to prioritize profit over care. Placing a ratio cap would place a balance between profit and care. Residents would receive quality care. CNA's and the nursing staff would be able to perform their duties safely. As frustration, stress, and fatigue are diminished in the workplace, worker's compensation claims, reports of abuse or neglect, and nursing home related lawsuits would decline. We require the government to mandate staff/ resident ratios for all aged care facilities across Texas and the United States, to protect our elders, to keep them safe from neglect and to be cared for with  dignity and respect in the manner they deserve.  In many aged care homes across Texas it is not unusual for one CNA staff member to care for 20 or more  residents, this is particularly dangerous at night with residents waiting  for long periods to receive the care they urgently need by overstretched carers and nurses who feel that they can never get the job done.  You can't rush the elderly residents that you care for into doing there daily living routines, they don't move as fast, there bones are brittle, or they have medical conditions that really slow there mobility down. From what I have researched DADS can't enforce a ratio to be placed on facilities. And that standard staffing is 1:15 ratio and that, that is okay because there are other employees on staff such as, ADON DON RN LVN ect., that can pitch in and provide CNA care for residents, but we all know that this does not happen. They all have there own job responsibilities to fulfill. There are mandated staffing levels in child care centres, kindergartens, schools and hospitals. They cater for people with different levels of need in different locations. Why should vulnerable frail, older people miss out on this protection? As with childcare, mandated staff resident ratios for aged care facilities across Texas and the United states are imperative for the protection and care of our valuable, vulnerable elderly citizens. A reasonable ratio cap would look as follows: Day shift: 1:6 Evening shift:1:12 Night shift: 1:16 Whether you are a CNA RN LVN or family member of an elderly that has been placed in a nursing homes facility, please sign the petition to make a difference.
