Stop mining in the deep seas

The Issue

Companies like Tesla Inc. and DeepGreen plan to extract minerals from the seabed. While the sea floor has been thought for centuries to be a barren wasteland, it is actually quite rich with minerals that are valuable. There is a rising demand for Cobalt for battery powered cars. However, this comes at a cost. Many ecosystems, even ones that don't involve the deep sea, are going to be greatly and possibly irreversibly damaged. Microbes in the deep sea that are crucial for ocean environments could be disturbed, and these ecosystems are very slow to recover.

"The company says it does not use any hazardous chemicals, don't mine where there are areas of high diversity of marine life and only operate to depths of up to 500ft."

Vents in the seafloor which are crucial for some species to eat or mate are going to be destroyed. "Churning up the seabed could disrupt this natural ocean process, and lead to the release of this stored carbon into the ocean and atmosphere – leading to an increase in the earth’s temperature." (GreenPeace.org)

Please sign if you believe in helping the planet and it's precious ecosystems, even the ones we cannot see! The industry's greed should not win over the common good of the planet.
