As we are aware, MyEdBC is the system that has been implemented at terry fox secondary for keeping student records secure and organized. It is used by schools across the province with varying levels of communication between student, teacher, and parent. For middle and elementary schools, this is understandable, but for secondary level students, this poses a few complications.

Secondary students are expected to grow and develop into independent people during their time at secondary school, without or with minimal guidance from a parent or guardian. However, the implementation of the MyEdBC system prevents this, in halting the ability to be resourceful in students and encouraging them to “just have mom or dad (or other guardian) do it” instead of seeking out their own records. Another problem that arises is when a student is in a potentially unsafe environment, this may cause problems when class grades they may not want to share for their own home safety are at the fingertips of their parent or guardian because of the availability of the parent portal.

This petition is to ultimately halt the usage of the parent portal for MyEdBC at terry fox secondary, implementing that only the student portal be used, and the student can share their records with their parent or guardian if they feel inclined to. The goal of this is to improve independence in Terry Fox secondary students, as well as removing a potential factor of putting students in unsafe home environments.
