Protect animals from overbreeding and puppy mills

The Issue

As you may know, there are over 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S, many of which are keeping dogs in deplorable and inhumane conditions. Many of these facilities are operating legally, meaning that they are operating because laws are non-existent to regulate that industry or they’re operating within the confines of present laws. Tennessee does not have any specific laws regulating breeders, so we often have to start be creating and strengthening laws to better protect dogs.

Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, without adequate veterinary care, food, water and socialization. Puppy mill dogs do not get to experience treats, toys, exercise or basic grooming. Dogs are often kept in cages with wire flooring that injures their paws and legs—and it is not unusual for cages to be stacked up in columns. Breeding dogs at mills might spend their entire lives outdoors, exposed to the elements, or crammed inside filthy structures where they never get the chance to feel the sun or breathe fresh air.

I am asking that you be a voice for the dogs that are used just for breeding, push for laws to limit litters per year, and require registration, proper vet care, and inspection for all breeders in the State of Tennessee. Also, push for tighter laws regulating pet shops.
