REMOVE CONFEDERATE MONUMENTS IN TENNESSEE
This petition had 72 supporters
This petition is to remove all symbols, monuments, memorials, names, displays, flags, etc, to any government funded street, highway, buildings, etc, that depicts anything related to the Confederacy or anyone that was associated with or fought for it in the entire state of Tennessee.
Please see the report published by the SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER https://www.splcenter.org/sites/default/files/whoseheritage_splc.pdf
"This is not an attempt to erase history. It is an effort to end the government’s endorsement of a symbol that has always represented the oppression of an entire race. These historical symbols belong in museums and other educational settings where people can see them and learn the full history of slavery, the Confederacy, the Civil War and Jim Crow."
There are at least 80 depictions or actual monuments, including holidays that the Governor signs annually, that I am requesting to be removed permanently.
Tennessee is a progressive thinking state even in the past whether right or wrong, these depictions have no place in our present and future. Physical depictions can be preserved in museums. Attending schools and driving on streets named after confederate soldiers doesn't support the values of the citizens and taxpayers. We as Tennesseans can define our future and lead the way into the new modern era of progression, innovation, inclusion, and forward thinking by changing how our government and landscape is viewed generation after generation. Private citizens still can display whatever they want, that's the beauty of being an American, but the government cannot play an active nor inactive role in an oppressive ideology. Slaves built everything that Tennessee is, or better stated, Tennessee and its wealth was built upon the backs of slaves. History supports this as well as the fact that the war was fought to preserve that way of life, not the politically correct explanation of STATES RIGHTS. With that being said, Tennessee should be adorned with names, monuments, and memorials to the people that suffered. Yet, that is not what I am asking. There should be nothing but modern representations and unoffensive representations to represent who we ALL are as citizens. Also, I am prepared to offer a timeline of when most of these monuments were displayed and with some form of aid from the government or taxpayer funds. During Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement majority of symbols of confederacy arose in response by white supremacists and the government allowed this. New Orleans has started this, as well as some states have made some efforts. I'm asking that the entire state of Tennessee has them removed and preserved. Street names and school names, etc have no need for preservation except in the city records.
SIGN THIS PETITION TO SUPPORT CHANGE! ALL RACES CAN SHOW THAT THE UGLY PAST HAS NO PLACE IN WHAT WE VALUE AND REPRESENT TODAY AS A COMMUNITY AND A STATE! ANYONE CAN SIGN EVEN IF YOU DO NOT LIVE IN TENNESSEE.
