Tell Trump: Unfreeze Social Services Funds — Don’t Punish Kids for Politics
The Issue
The Trump administration just froze more than $10 billion in federal funding for child care and essential social services — but only in five Democratic-led states: California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York.
No evidence of fraud has been provided. No warning was given to the states. And the ones paying the price? Low-income families, working parents, and children who depend on programs like Head Start, child care subsidies, and basic cash assistance.
This is not accountability. This is political retribution.
The Department of Health and Human Services claims the funding freeze is meant to prevent fraud, citing vague allegations — some stemming from a viral YouTube video — but so far, federal and state agencies have offered no proof of systemic wrongdoing. In fact, two of the impacted states say they weren’t even formally notified before the freeze took effect.
The affected programs include:
- TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) — providing basic support to struggling families.
- The Child Care and Development Fund — helping parents afford safe, quality child care.
- The Social Services Block Grant — funding a wide range of services from elder care to domestic violence support.
These are not luxury programs. They are lifelines. Freezing these funds doesn’t punish fraud — it punishes children, single parents, working moms, and families already on the brink.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said it best: “To use the power of government to harm the neediest Americans is immoral and indefensible.”
We are calling on President Trump, the Department of Health and Human Services, and Congress to immediately unfreeze all social services and child care funds for these five states.
If fraud exists, investigate it — but don’t strip entire communities of support based on politics.
Real families are hurting. This is not how a country takes care of its people.
Sign this petition to demand: unfreeze the funds, and stop using children as pawns in political games.
