The Issue

President Donald Trump has just announced that, starting February 1, his administration will cut off federal funding to entire states that support sanctuary cities—local governments that choose not to serve as extensions of federal immigration enforcement.

This is more than an attack on policy—it’s an attack on our communities.

Sanctuary cities exist to protect people, not shield criminals. They ensure that immigrants—documented or not—can report abuse, seek medical care, enroll children in school, and access basic services without fear of being detained or deported. These cities are built on trust between residents and local officials, and they make all of us safer.

Now, the Trump administration is threatening to strip funding from cities and states simply because they refuse to help carry out mass deportations. That means withholding money for housing, schools, food programs, and public health—services that millions rely on.

The courts have already blocked similar efforts in the past. But Trump is trying again, using political threats to punish states like California, New York, Illinois, and Connecticut for standing up for their values.

This is unconstitutional. It’s discriminatory. And it’s morally wrong.

We, the undersigned, call on:

  • President Trump to immediately withdraw this threat and restore all funding to sanctuary jurisdictions;
  • Congress to take urgent action to block any executive order that punishes states or cities for protecting immigrants;
  • Governors and mayors to refuse to cave to federal pressure and continue protecting their communities.

No president should be able to hold an entire state hostage just because its cities refuse to turn their backs on immigrant families. Sanctuary cities are not a crime—they are a commitment to dignity, safety, and equal treatment under the law.

Tell Trump: Hands off our sanctuary cities. Stop threatening our communities.
