Tell the President: We need a Presidential Proclamation to make 2012 the 'Year of the Tree' to eliminate hunger in America by 2020.

Tell the President: We need a Presidential Proclamation to make 2012 the 'Year of the Tree' to eliminate hunger in America by 2020.
The Issue
The logic is undeniable.
The land mass of the United States is over 3.5 million square miles. With 640 acres per square mile, this amounts to over 2 billion acres of land. The most amazing fact is that edible plants are found across it, except in the coldest and most arid regions. But, even in the desert, plants are found that give us their life sustaining fruits.
The Bureau of Land Management administers America's public lands, totaling approximately 253 million acres.
The United States Forest Service administers the nation's 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands, which encompass 193 million acres.
Together these two government agencies steward close to 450 million acres in the United States of America. Both of their mission statements are very similar and both propose that they are committed to providing these lands for the good of all Americans, present and future.
The mission of the Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.
The BLM's stated mission is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
But, if that was not enough, approximately forty-five percent of all forestland in the United States, or 354 million acres, is under non-industrial private ownership.
An average person eats about 1200 lbs. of food per year.
In a good year, apple trees produce approximately 25,000 lbs. of apples per acre. Pears produce over 20,000 lbs. per acre. Mango trees can produce over 30,000 lbs. of fruit per acre. Figs produce over 4,000 lbs. of fruit per acre. Many nut trees produce approximately 1,000 lbs. of food per year.
If an acre of apples could feed 20 people for an entire year, just think about how many people could be fed if we all just planted one fruit, citrus or nut tree on a small portion of the 2 billion acres of land in the United States of America?
Or, think about what could happen to the future of our citizenry if a small portion of these lands the United States manages, under 4% of the total (or, approximately 2.5% if the private forest lands were included), were planted with fruit and nut trees.
The Federal Government of the United States of America could eliminate hunger within it's borders by 2020.
Don't just plant a tree, plant a tree to feed a human!
Let's work together to make 2012 the 'Year of the Tree'.
