The Issue

Texas is enforcing a law that many believe was designed to silence and intimidate drag performers. Senate Bill 12, passed in 2023 and just reinstated by a federal appeals court, targets “sexually oriented performances” in public or near minors. But the truth is, this law was pushed with one clear target in mind: drag shows.

Republican leaders made their intentions explicit. Governor Greg Abbott posted on social media: “That’s right — Texas banned drag in public.” But many drag performances are not sexually explicit. They are art, joy, protest, history, and survival. And now, they are under attack.

SB 12 has already created fear and confusion across the state. Performers are being silenced. Pride events are being scaled back. Community centers and venues are unsure what is allowed, and many are simply choosing to cancel out of fear of fines or lawsuits.

We can’t wait for the courts to fix this. We need cities, towns, venues, and Pride organizers across Texas to take a stand right now. That means:

  • Publicly stating their support for drag performers and LGBTQ+ artists.
  • Creating and defending safe, welcoming spaces for drag in their communities.
  • Pledging not to enforce or cooperate with state efforts that censor constitutionally protected art.

We call on local officials, venue owners, and Pride organizers to resist political pressure and uphold the values of inclusion, creativity, and free expression. Drag has always been part of the cultural and civic fabric of Texas. It belongs in libraries, bars, theaters, parades, and public parks.

Sign this petition to say you stand with drag performers — and you expect your city to do the same.
