The Issue

Iowa voters have spoken, and their own representative isn't listening.

A new poll of 625 registered Iowa voters found that nearly twice as many oppose the Save Our Bacon Act as support it. After learning that Congresswoman Ashley Hinson is one of its biggest champions, 64% said it made them view her less favorably.

The bill would strip California and Massachusetts of state laws requiring that pigs, calves, and chickens be given enough space to turn around and move. Those laws mostly target gestation crates, the metal cages used on factory hog farms where animals can barely move at all.

Hinson has framed this as defending Iowa farmers from "out-of-touch activists." But small Iowa farmers disagree. Anna Pesek, who raises Berkshire hogs without confinement, says the Save Our Bacon Act "cements a system that no one, besides a handful of major corporations, benefits from," according to The New Lede.

More than 700 veterinarians have written to Congress urging them to keep this provision out of the Farm Bill. The Senate already left it out. Hinson wants it put back in, against the wishes of the voters she represents.

Sign to tell Rep. Hinson to drop the Save Our Bacon Act from the Farm Bill before it's too late.
