South Australian Councils to provide Modern Cloth Nappy Rebate

Disposable nappies are the third largest source of waste in landfills in Australia. In the first year, babies in disposal nappies will have used and discarded approximately 2500 disposal nappies. There were an amazing 305,832 births in 2019 which means on top of the existing billions, there are at least another 1.5 BILLION nappies sitting in landfill. The plastics and gels used in disposable nappies can take 500 years to decompose, if at all.
Modern cloth nappies are the way forward to a cleaner Earth. They are free from plastics and nasty chemicals. Although they can be expensive to start off at first, they actually cost less than 1-2 years of disposable nappy use. After all the children are toilet trained, they can be sold again or given away thus creating even less waste. For full time use, around 24 nappies is sufficient which can cost around $850.
Since the production of disposal nappies, there are literally trillions of soiled nappies rotting on Earth. This is not a legacy I want to leave for our children and future generations. We must act now and do what we can to encourage the use of modern cloth nappies.
The initial cost of modern cloth nappies is a major deterrent. It’s difficult for many families to spend a large chunk of money to begin their cloth nappy journey. We, the undersigned, hereby petition that Tea Tree Gully Council (and all South Australian Councils) follow in the lead of the City of Holdfast Bay and offer a rebate of 50% off the purchase price to a maximum of a $100 rebate.
As a mother of two and an advocate for a greener Adelaide, this is a cause I strongly believe in. Please join me in trying to make a change for the environment!
